Schrödinger Dividable Conference Room

Schrödinger, the NYC-based leader in life sciences and materials research, recently enlisted Ohm Systems to design and install an extremely versatile dividable/combinable conference room for their expanding Portland office to meet their needs today and in the future. Ohm Systems worked with general contractor Howard S. Wright on this tenant improvement in Downtown Portland’s One Main Place office tower.

The ability for the room to be easily combined into one large all-hands room, or divided into two smaller conference rooms, was critical to the systems’ design. Apple iPads were installed near the entry into either room that may be removed to operate the system, or magnetically docked on the wall for charging. Behind the scenes, a Crestron control processor reliably controls all devices based on the desired scenario.

A total of four PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras were installed (2 per room) providing a variety of perspectives depending on the type of meeting taking place: audience-facing or presenter-facing.

Each room features two soft-codec appliances dedicated to that space: one Google Chromebox for Business for Google Hangouts meetings, and an Apple Mac Mini for all other videoconferencing platforms (Zoom.us, Cisco WebEx, GoToMeeting, BlueJeans, etc.). Additionally, users are able to BYOD (“bring your own device”) and connect to the room system using wall jacks in each room.

Video displays consisted of high-resolution Epson ultra-short-throw (UST) laser projectors displaying on 100-inch Epson dry-erase whiteboards, providing large, bright and detailed high-definition imagery.

Audio performance is the most important element of any videoconferencing system and Schrödinger’s room makes use of an array of Crestron recessed ceiling speakers and tri-element pendant-microphones from Oregon-based microphone manufacturer Audix.

Schrödinger’s required high performance audio and video, flexibility, reliability and, most importantly, simple, intuitive operation by anyone. Ohm Systems’ custom-tailored AV solution delivered on all counts.
